Dublin Hammers Christmas Party 2022

The Dublin Hammers Christmas Party! - 10th December 2022

This happened to be the second Dublin Hammers Christmas Party held in 2022! The first one was back in March as we held the postponed 2021 party.

Even though it was the second coming, we still managed to get a great attendance on the night. There was an earlier than usual start as crowds gathered to watch England exit the World Cup courtesy of the French. Even though they brought on Paddy O’Grealish in the dying minutes they still couldn’t overcome a very good French team. Suffice to say our UK members were serenaded with versions of “Football’s Going Home” and “Leaving on a Jet Plane”!!

After the game ended, the DJ (a late substitute on the night) set up his gear and food was delivered to the tables – as ever it didn’t last long as the hungry hammers got stuck in.

Meanwhile Emma and Gerry “I’ll do it if nobody else will” Nolan sold the raffle tickets. Now Gerry has a bit of a reputation for never selling the lucky tickets but I have to say I managed to win my Christmas drinks and a garden gnome!

Liam as ever was MC for the raffle which was held at breakneck speed. So as soon as your ticket was called you had to be quick or else it was a case of “they’re not here, pick another ticket” from our Liamo – oh and don’t even dream of contemplating which prize you wanted, otherwise you’d get the standard “It’s all just shite anyway so hurry up and pick something”!

Billy Corr came up with the novel idea of having shoeboxes wrapped in Christmas paper containing a secret prize that you had to open in front of everyone – one of the boxes was a booby prize! First up to try their luck was Jimmy Conway who managed to pick the booby prize of a... brick!! Rumours that Darragh O’Brien our current housing minister had been in touch with Jimmy to say he wants the brick, as it’s a great start. I managed to win the second box which contained a bottle of wine and a West Ham garden gnome. Gerry “the Crooner” who happens to be a Shamrock Rovers fan managed to win the third box that contained a Bohemians FC garden gnome which gave us all a great laugh.

Anyway once all the prizes were gone, it was back to the music and singing as our DJ (the son of our usual DJ) got the party started. But before he got started Liam called on us all for a moment’s reflection to remember our Hammers friend, Jim McCloskey, who sadly passed away recently. He then launched into his classic “Billy Don’t be a Hero” which set the tone for the evening.

First up to sing was David Curtis with “Let me Entertain You” followed by Gary the Bohs Fan with “Born to be Wild”. Inbetween the singers the floor was keeping busy with us all throwing shapes that we thought we had forgotten. Paul from Newry gave us his version of “Anarchy in the UK” – where he forgot most of the words which is difficult to do in Karaoke since they’re displayed on the screen! Gerry “the Crooner” gave us “Little old Wine Drinker Me” while Craig belted out “Angels”.

Our President gave a short speech prior to his song where he welcomed us all to another great night out and wished us all a happy Christmas. He wished Gary a speedy recovery from the shoulder injury that prevented him from attending the night and dispelled the rumours that Gary had suffered a jaw injury!! As usual he performed “Human” with gusto.

The party started to empty out a bit earlier than usual which I figure was because of the worry people had with transport home, but there was still a large gathering for our national anthem “Forever Blowing Bubbles” at the end of the night.

The verdict on our second Christmas Party of 2022 was... bleedin’ deadly!!!!!!
