Dublin Hammers - Going Away Party 2013

Josh’s & Amara’s Going Away Party - Saturday 28th September 2013

We met to say goodbye to a good “Mate” and a very efficient Travel Secretary. As Josh, Amara and Summer Rose head off for a new life in Germany we felt that the “going away” party should be one to remember. And it sure was!

I had promised my better half that all of the WAGs would be there as she was in fear of gate crashing a stag party! When we arrived there were only 4 other females in the room... with lots of excuses being thrown my way as to various absences. The President was there without the First Lady and he had to head off early to another function. The pressure of public life... who’d want it! Anyway as the night progressed the female population increased... so I was let off the hook.

The DJ was blasting out 80s disco hits when we arrived and the general talk concerned of the defeat to Hull earlier and the trip to the Villa game. Downstairs was a sea of red as the Cork hurling fans crowded into the pub to discuss and rewatch a classic hurling encounter from Croke Park.

The main man arrived and was greeted by a loud cheer. The food was served up and enjoyed by all, Liam started getting the Karaoke list together and the music changed to get our dancing feet going.

Liam made the small speech and presentation to Josh and then handed the microphone over to Josh to say a few words. He thanked us all for the many great years he had enjoyed as a Dublin Hammer. He originally came to Ireland to visit his dad for two weeks... and thirteen years later he was heading off to new horizons with his own family – life is always full of surprises.

Kevin Murphy the second was first up to sing a few songs and he was quickly followed by Charlie O’Reilly, Amara who was joined by Josh, Dessie Doyle, Liamo, Brian Madden, Brian O’Flaherty who was also joined by Josh, Tommy 4, Tommy Noctor, Billy, Amara & Paddy Rogers and Tommy 4 again.

We danced and sang the night away and at some unearthly hour we were joined by a number of very drunk and happy (they lost by the way!) Cork men who were very happy to sing Bubbles with us and gave us a few songs of their own.

Eventually the lights came on, we finished our drinks, said our goodbyes and looked forward to meeting up with Josh next May. It was a terrific night and a good warm up to our Christmas Party – the only advice I’ll give everyone is... book the babysitter now!

Special thanks to Gerry Murtagh (report & photos) and Brian Madden (photos).
